In an interview with Israel’s Channel 10 program, BMFI spokesperson Hasan Afzal says they want to counteract those who have moved past discussing a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians to questioning Israel’s very right to exist. Afzal said in the interview that such a question is “nonsense” and notes their advocacy for Israel focuses on human rights.
The group’s Web site contrasts the violent and oppressive actions of some Muslim regimes against people from the region with the hospitality and opportunity for democracy provided by Israel. Says BMFI, “We do not believe the Arab–Israeli conflict is a war over land or religion, but it is a clash of ideas. Israel, as a Western liberal democracy, extends equal rights to all of its citizens, regardless of religion or race. Muslims have more rights in Israel than in any other country in the Middle East.”
Commenting on various terror attacks against Israel, they said that such attacks actually hurt the Palestinians’ cause. Afzal said that “recent events” show that groups such as Hamas are “determined to kill indiscriminately and use ordinary Palestinians as hostages to their cause. We urge all British Muslims to condemn these senseless attacks, which block any attempts for peace and ruin the lives of both Israelis and Palestinians”
