“Such huge constructions definitely point to the organizational and technical ability of these people,” said Reich, who spoke with Bridges for Peace. “A village with a few houses and a few people cannot create such a thing…But a city with a ruler who can organize, who can give orders, can certainly do it, and it was done.”
The known section of the parallel wall structure is 24 meters (78 feet) long, with one wall measuring 8 meters high (26 feet) at one point. The two walls are also about 3-4 meters (10–13 feet) thick. A portion of the fortification was actually uncovered a number of years ago, but has now been uncovered to a much better extent. And there is still more to uncover. In light of that, Reich noted that they still do not know what the structure is for certain.
Although, so far, very little has been found of the biblical construction associated with King David and Solomon, this Canaanite-era discovery affirms what the Scriptures have to say of ancient peoples there. “The story of the spies going from the desert, sent by Moses, and they tell of the huge Canaanite cities, Canaanite fortifications, this is, in a way, reflected in what we find in the excavations.”
