Putin and Bush: Muscle Flexing in the Middle East

February 5, 2008

The Bush administration was well-pleased with the international support received at the one-day Paris conference. They had hoped to raise US $5 billion to “stabilize” the PA. They received US $7.4 billion.

Even while the celebrations in Paris signaled the international confidence in the establishment of a Palestinian state, Vladimir Putin unleashed another masterstroke. His aids were arranging helicopter transport for the Russian leader to inspect a Russian flotilla of six warships, which is led by the Admiral Kuznetson aircraft carrier. This naval group will make their new home port in Syria.
