Give Up the Golan—A “Reasonable” Compromise?

January 3, 2007

In a memorandum to other expert advisers, Close wrote, “To have any realistic chance of success, I believe that the process would have to start with the announcement of a major initiative, promoted and vigorously supported by the United States, to reach a comprehensive resolution to the Israel–Arab crisis through a process of reasonable compromise and accommodation between Israel and her Arab neighbors.”

Close presents his option for a major initiative that would engage Syria, saying, “Perhaps the US will have to put pressure on Israel to make territorial concessions in the Golan.”
