Muslim Brotherhood Banned in Egypt

December 3, 2013

Upon Mubarak’s ouster, the Brotherhood became the controlling force with its head, Mohamed Morsi, being elected to the presidency in June 2012. Within a year, massive protests broke out; millions of citizens demanded Morsi’s ouster. The military responded and the international community, including the United States, backed the controversial removal of an elected leader by the military. In past months, most of the Muslim Brotherhood leadership has been arrested by the military. Branch offices of the Freedom and Justice party throughout the country are expected to be closed pursuant to the court order.
