The following letter was received by the Jewish Community of Donetsk, raising the ugly specter of anti-Semitism in ways chillingly similar to the Nazi actions during the Holocaust. While it is not clear who the leaflet originated with, it is clear that anti-Semitism is alive and kicking in the Ukraine.
Dear citizens of Jewish nationality,
As the leaders of Jewish community in Ukraine have supported the “bandera” (western) junta in Kiev and are hostile to the Orthodox Donetsk Republic and its citizens, the Headquarters of the National Donetsk Republic have decided the following:
All citizens of Jewish nationality older than 16 living on the territory of Sovereign Donetsk Republic must come to the acting Commissar on National minorities to the building of Donetsk State Administration room 514 for the registration till May 3, 2014. The registration fee is 50 US dollars.
You should have with you 50 US dollars to pay the registration fee, passports for the mark on religion, documents regarding family members, and also the title documents for all real estate and vehicles belonging to you.
In the case of evasion of registration the guilty ones will be deprived of citizenship and sent by force from the territory of republic with the confiscation of property.
Signed: Your national governor Denis Pushilin
Alex Tenzer, a Kiev native and one of the directors of the National Association of Immigrants from the Former USSR in Israel, said: “The Jewish-Ukrainian leadership supports Ukraine's new government, but it's hard to tell whether the leaflet is valid or simply a provocation. Anyway, the material is very anti-Semitic and reminds me of the kind of material distributed by the Nazis in WWII.” (Alex Tenzer quote excerpted from Ynetnews article)
