Israeli Raid on Iranian Weapons Facility in Syria: ‘What You Destroyed Saved Many Civilian Lives’

by JNS

Friday, 3 January 2025 | The Israel Defense Forces [IDF] on Thursday evening released bodycam footage of its September 8 special forces raid of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC] arms facility used by Hezbollah in northwestern Syria.

“Tonight, we reveal a special operation that took place in the heart of Syria in early September, during which dozens of fighters raided an underground site for the production of Iranian precision missiles in Syria,” IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a statement.

The IRGC built the underground missile factory with the aim of enabling its Hezbollah terrorist army “to produce a wide variety of hundreds of rockets and missiles per year,” the Israeli military spokesman said.

“The site was also meant to become a central infrastructure for producing rocket engines in the northern front,” Hagari continued. “We prevented this.”

On Wednesday, the IDF confirmed for the first time that its forces on September 8 had raided the Scientific Studies and Research Center, a military base that is believed to be responsible for research and development of nuclear, biological, chemical and missile technology and weapons.

The IDF revealed that the operation, which was carried out by the Israeli Air Force’s [IAF] elite Shaldag unit, destroyed a missile plant that was code-named “Deep Layer.” There were no casualties among Israeli soldiers.

The IDF revealed on Thursday night that more than 100 Shaldag troops landed by helicopters some 700 meters (0.4 mi.) from the site in the Masyaf area of northwestern Syria under the cover of fire support.

The IAF troops were said to have discovered critical equipment used to produce missiles, including a planetary mixer, numerous weapons and intelligence documents that were seized for further investigation.

“As a powerful explosion that felt like an earthquake destroyed the site, the fighters, with the backup of Unit 669 [the combat search and rescue extraction unit] and other IAF units, took the escape route towards aircraft that were waiting for them at the drop-off point,” the IDF stated.

The 300 kilograms [661.3 lb.] of bombs dropped by the IAF, along with the weight of the Iranian arms at the site, were said to have amounted to one ton.

IAF commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar told the Shaldag fighters upon their return from Syria that “what you destroyed there would have cost us the lives of many Israeli civilians,” according to the IDF statement.

“In the midst of this justified war, this [operation] was essential to the existence of the state,” Bar said. “We can be proud. We can tell future generations that we did a significant thing for Israel’s security.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the operation on Thursday as “one of the most important preventive operations that we have taken against the efforts of the Iranian axis to arm itself in order to attack us.”

The premier saluted “our heroic fighters for the daring and successful operation deep in Syria” and stated that the raid “attests to our boldness and determination to take action everywhere to defend ourselves.”

Prayer Focus
Give thanks for the success of this daring mission that destroyed a production site of weapons that would have been used against Israeli citizens. Give thanks also that none of the fighters who took part in this raid were hurt or injured and returned safely to Israel. Pray that any other weapons-producing sites will also be discovered and destroyed.

Scripture

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from those who rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men.

Ceasefire Talks Stall, Katz to Discuss Alternatives to Hamas Rule of Gaza

by Itamar Eichner ~ Ynetnews

Map of Gaza Strip showing November 2024 ceasefire line.

Wednesday, 1 January 2025 | Amid the stalemate in negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release deal, the security cabinet scheduled to meet this week has been postponed until Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recovers from surgery to remove his prostate gland. Defense Minister Israel Katz will convene a meeting with members of the government on Thursday and will discuss the day after the war and an alternative rule of the Strip to Hamas.

The obstacles to the talks remain the number of hostages that would be released in the first phase of the deal, with Israel demanding twice as many Israeli captives than Hamas has agreed to free.

The terror group claims Israel is demanding the release of soldiers and wounded men although they do not comply with the criteria for the humanitarian exchange. They would agree to hand over bodies of dead hostages if a deal is made.

Another major obstacle is the demand to end the war. Security officials warned the government that Hamas was rebuilding its control of Gaza. Hours later a “senior official” said that according to Netanyahu, even if a deal is made, Israel would return to the fighting in Gaza until it achieves its declared goals.

That statement was an Israeli admission from the senior official that Israel was heading toward a partial release of hostages that would not include an end to the war as Hamas demands, before all the hostages would be released.

The prime minister is in the opinion that there can be no plan for the day after the war until all of Hamas’s capabilities are destroyed,” the official said adding that there have been discussions in the appropriate forums on the matter.

“The policy of the prime minister in Gaza is that neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority [PA] would govern Gaza, including having responsibility over distribution of humanitarian aid. The security agencies are considering alternatives and would continue to do so. Cutting Hamas off from aid distribution is meant to prevent the terror group from controlling the civilian population and to bring about the release of hostages.”

‘You’re Almost Home’: Emotional Call Between Hostage IDF Soldier and Rescuers

by Yoav Zitun ~ Ynetnews

Ori Magidish pictured with her family after her release from Hamas captivity.

Wednesday, 1 January 2025 | More than a year after her dramatic rescue from captivity in Gaza, a recording of the moments following the release of Israeli soldier Ori Magidish has been made public. The recording, unveiled on Tuesday, highlights the emotional exchange between Magidish and a Shin Bet [Israel Security Agency] operative after her rescue during a ground operation in Gaza.

Magidish, the first hostage freed during Israel’s October 2023 campaign, was rescued 23 days after being abducted by Hamas terrorists from her post at Nahal Oz, where she served as a lookout. Just four months after her release, Magidish made the decision to re-enlist in the military, joining the Intelligence Corps.

In the newly revealed recording, a Shin Bet operative reassures Magidish during the moments after her rescue: “Ori, dear, you’re in good hands. The team got you out—we’re bringing you home. You’re incredible and brave. Well done. Soon, there will be a big hug waiting for you.” Speaking from the operations control room, the operative added, “Your parents, Chaim and Margalit, are waiting for you. You’re almost home. You’re amazing.” A clearly shaken Magidish responded quietly, “Yes, I’m okay.”

Shin Bet officials explained their decision to assign a female operative to speak with Magidish immediately after her rescue. The operative works in the organization’s Special Operations Division.

Magidish’s remarkable journey led to her being chosen as one of the torchbearers during Israel’s most recent Independence Day ceremony. Before lighting the torch, she dedicated it to her fellow lookouts: “To my comrades who defended the borders then and continue to protect them now. To all those who made my rescue possible. Even in the darkness I experienced, I knew you would come for me.”

Following her release, Magidish spoke about the strength she drew during her time in captivity. “I believe in God. I knew He was with me and would save me. I prayed every day—not from a prayer book, but from my heart. I felt the presence of my late grandmother, grandfather, and cousin. I clung to their memory and trusted that I would be freed, whether through a deal or a rescue mission. I believed in my country and my army, and that belief gave me strength to keep going.”

She also described an unshakable intuition that her rescue was imminent. “I can’t explain it, but I knew they were coming that day. I knew they wouldn’t leave me behind. I was overwhelmed when I saw them.”

Since her release, rumors have swirled about her ordeal, but Magidish has returned to a semblance of normalcy, even resuming military service. Her mother, Maggie, dismissed the speculation, saying: “Just because she’s not in perfect condition doesn’t mean she’s broken. People have said everything from claiming she was a Shin Bet plant to labeling us a crime family. They even questioned her appearance, asking how her nails could look manicured after captivity.”

Acknowledging the challenges, Maggie added, “Ori is living her life like any young woman her age, but, of course, no one returns from captivity unchanged. She lost friends there… It’s a harsh reality we’re still living because the war continues. But we know we’re incredibly fortunate. What happened to us is nothing short of a miracle.”

Prayer Focus
Continue to pray fervently for the release of the remaining captives still being held hostage in Gaza, while also giving thanks for Ori’s miraculous rescue. Pray that each one who remains a hostage will cling to faith in God, the only thing able to truly sustain them during their captivity. Just as He cares for the sparrow, He is aware of the suffering and pain of those held captive.

Scripture

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young—even Your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.

Israel on Guard: The Complex Puzzle of Syria’s Ahmad al-Sharaa

by Smadar Perry ~ Ynetnews

Defacto Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa at a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha in Damascus.

Thursday, 2 January 2025 | Barbara Leaf, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, left her meeting with Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Syria’s de facto leader, highly satisfied.

The press conference scheduled for the conclusion of the event was canceled under the pretext of security concerns. However, after 12 years of American diplomatic disengagement, Leaf gave a positive report about the conversation, which lasted many hours.

Leaf, by the way, was accompanied by senior advisors, including Daniel Rubinstein, a Jewish former US consul in Jerusalem, who now serves as a special advisor on Syrian affairs.

Abu Mohammed al-Golani, who traded his nom de guerre for his official name Ahmad al-Sharaa after Bashar Assad fled Syria, has also changed his appearance. No longer clad in the light robes of his Al-Qaeda days or Zelensky-style military fatigues, he arrived at the meeting with Leaf in a civilian suit, without the traditional head covering (amama).

Leaf, for her part, did not hide her satisfaction and announced the cancellation of the US $10 million financial reward for anyone providing information on al-Sharaa’s, who had been listed among the most wanted terrorists since 2017. Undoubtedly, a significant achievement for al-Sharaa.

In Umayyad Square in Damascus, crowds continue to dance and wave banners declaring a “New Syria,” while in Aleppo, tens of thousands have poured into the streets to celebrate. Film actor Maxim Khalil, who returned to Syria after 13 years in exile due to fear of arrest, embraced his fans and pleaded, “Let the new regime organize itself to act for the benefit of us all. Syria is now turning a new page.”

In Israel, officials are treading carefully around the emerging Syrian regime. On one hand, military operations continue, but with a focus on specific targets—Iranian weapons depots and Hezbollah military camps.

On one hand, al-Sharaa has pledged that women will be able to study—’even medicine’—and work. On the other hand, when photographed with a young female passerby in Damascus or interviewed by a CNN reporter, he insists that they wear a headscarf.

Ahmad al-Sharaa, in his first public statement regarding Israel, criticized the IDF’s operations in Syrian territory. Ynetnews, in the same breath, he clarified that his Syria intends to honor the 1974 disengagement agreements following the Yom Kippur War. He immediately called on the international community to ensure Israel adheres to these agreements. In an interview with the Times of London, he said, “We do not want conflicts with any country, not even with Israel.”

Attention should also be paid to al-Sharaa’s ambivalence regarding women in Syria. On one hand, he speaks about women who were thrown into prisons and subjected to assault. He has pledged that women will be able to study—”even medicine”—and work. On the other hand, when photographed with a young female passerby in Damascus or interviewed by a CNN reporter, he insists that they wear a headscarf.

Arab media outlets outside Syria have been quick to launch sharp criticisms, warning that “Golani-Sharaa intends to establish an Islamic state akin to Afghanistan.”

In Israel, intelligence agencies closely monitor events in Syria and attempt to decode whether there is truly a “new” al-Sharaa or merely a rebranded version of his former self. His demand for women to wear head coverings has not gone unnoticed. Has he genuinely reinvented himself? The pieces of the puzzle have yet to fully align.

The Israel Defense Forces continues its operations in Syria, and all eyes remain on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who ultimately holds significant influence over the unfolding events.

Prayer Focus
Pray that any hidden motives of al-Sharaa will be revealed clearly and convincingly for the whole world to see. Pray for Israel’s leaders to have discernment and to make wise decisions regarding the nation of Syria, which has yet to recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel. Pray for the Church in Syria to have freedom to share the Gospel.

Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor who seek after my life; let those be turned back and brought to confusion who plot my hurt.

‘Don’t Call for De-escalation When We Defend Ourselves,’ Israel Tells UN of Houthis

by Mike Wagenheim ~ JNS

Danny Danon, Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, briefs the Security Council meeting on threats to International Peace and Security in Yemen and Israel, December 30, 2024.

Wednesday, 1 January 2025 | Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations [UN], held up a map at the UN Security Council meeting, which Israel called, on Monday to demonstrate that Yemen shares no border with the Jewish state. Yet the Houthis, an Iranian proxy, have attacked Israel from Yemen purportedly in solidarity with Hamas and have disturbed international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

“We have no dispute with them, yet they send their missiles and drones to murder our people, and why?” Danon said. “Pure, radical, jihadist [Muslim holy war with unbelievers] hatred for Jews.”

Danon, who told the global body that the attacks are personal for him after the Houthis fired missiles at the school he attended as a child, said that Israel has had enough.

“If you didn’t speak up when our schools were hit, don’t speak up when we respond,” he said. “Don’t call for de-escalation when we defend ourselves.”

The Israeli envoy slammed the United Nations for failing to enforce the Security Council’s arms embargo against the Houthis and said that Israel is aware of several ships that have evaded UN verification and inspection and have delivered Iranian weapons through Houthi-controlled Red Sea ports.

“It is time the world wakes up. A terror group attacking trade routes, collaborating with global terror networks and armed by Iran is not just a regional threat,” Danon said. “It is a grim warning for the world order. They have been given a green light for terror.”

He warned the Houthis to learn from the downfall of Hamas, Hezbollah and Bashar Assad, the deposed Syrian president. “You will share their miserable fate,” Danon said.

JNS asked Stéphanie Tremblay, associate spokeswoman for António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, why the global body’s head has—as he did during Israel’s war against Hezbollah—only criticized the Houthis in tandem with Israel and only once the Jewish state responds to the almost daily fire it incurs.

Tremblay told JNS that Guterres has issued press statements that criticized only the Houthis.

JNS sought further comment from Tremblay, noting that those statements condemned the Houthi only for attacks in the Red Sea or for kidnapping UN staff but not for attacking Israel.

After the Houthis shot missiles at Israel last week, JNS asked Tremblay at a UN press conference on December 27 whether Guterres had issued a statement on the attack.

“We are very concerned that the Houthis continue to launch attacks targeting Israel, including [the] missile fired earlier today that was intercepted,” Tremblay said, before pivoting to Houthi attacks on shipping and marine vessels.

China and Slovenia criticized Israel’s latest response to the Houthis, which included strikes on the airport in the capital of Sanaa on December 26, while the head of the World Health Organization was waiting to board a flight.

South Korea accused the Houthis of “exploiting” regional instability in ways that endanger Yemeni citizens and impede the prospects for peace, and Ecuador said the Houthis had launched a “campaign of aggression” that lacks justification and holds grave security and humanitarian consequences.

Japan also rejected the Houthis’ claims of acting in solidarity with Palestinians, calling their actions “opportunistic.”

Prayer Focus
Pray for an awakening at the United Nations as Israel’s ambassador has clearly pointed out their hypocrisy of silence when Israel is attacked and condemnation when Israel defends itself. Pray that this speech will be seen as an opportunity to turn from standing against God’s chosen people into one of support or at least neutrality.

Scripture

Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head.

‘Shadow Students’: Training the Next Generation of Israeli Spies

by Tamar Trabelsi-Hadad ~ Ynetnews

In Israel, students as young as ninth grade are identified for elite training programs that prepare them for roles in the nation’s intelligence agencies (illustrative).

Thursday, 2 January 2025 | As early as ninth grade, students destined for Israel’s primary intelligence agencies Mossad [Israeli intelligence agency] and Shin Bet [Israeli internal security organization] are identified and enrolled in the elite Odem program, where they adopt code letters in place of full names.

Jointly run by the Defense Ministry, Education Ministry, Israel Defense Forces [IDF], Mossad and Shin Bet, the program is described as “the jewel of leadership in the technological arena,” created by the architects of other elite initiatives for future military recruits like Talpiot and Psagot.

The first cohort in the specialized high school that was established in the town of Katzrin in the Golan Heights is now completing matriculation exams, and registration for the next class has begun. Graduates will pursue electrical engineering degrees at the Technion, alongside specialized training, exposure to security forces and participation in cutting-edge technological projects. Following this, they will undertake six years of military service, preparing for leadership roles in technology within the Shin Bet and Mossad.

The program aims for gender and geographical equity, with 38% female participants and 40% from northern and southern Israel. The defense establishment seeks to raise both figures to 50%.

Roy Shefer, head of the elite programs division, said the Odem program addresses a critical shortage of technological and managerial talent in Israel’s top security units.

“Instead of waiting until the end of 12th grade for students to reach the required level, Odem begins training in 10th grade, focusing on academics like math, physics and English, as well as leadership skills,” he said.

“The goal,” he explained, “is to give boys and girls the chance to close gaps, expand technological knowledge and develop personally during a formative stage—before decisions are made and opportunities are closed off.”

A., a 12th grader from Kiryat Shmona and a member of Odem’s first graduating class, said the program aligns with his aspirations. “I want to serve in a meaningful role where my skills can contribute to my country. After October 7, it’s clear how essential this program is. In the Shin Bet and Mossad, you rarely get credit for your actions, and no one may ever know it was you who acted. To me, that’s the beauty of it.”

S., a 12th-grade student from a Gaza-border community, echoed those sentiments, tying her ambitions to her upbringing centered on service and Zionism. “The people behind technological developments saved my life,” she said. “Even in the current war, the critical role of technology is undeniable. I’ve always wanted to understand the work of those in the shadows and find where I can contribute. My ambition is to be one of them—protecting others quietly, ensuring no one even realizes there was ever a threat.”

Prayer Focus
Give thanks for each one of the students and teachers who are investing themselves in the future defense of Israel. Pray that their time of preparation will set a firm foundation for their future contributions to Israel’s intelligence gathering organizations. May they learn that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Prov. 1:7a).

Shin Bet Reports 40% Drop in Terrorist Successes During 2024

by JNS

Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar (right) attends a state ceremony at the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem marking the Hebrew calendar anniversary of the previous year’s Hamas-led terrorist invasion, October 27, 2024.

Wednesday, 1 January 2025 | The Israel Security Agency [Shin Bet] thwarted 1,040 significant terrorist attacks in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem in 2024, according to the agency’s annual report published on Tuesday.

This represents a 40% reduction in successful terrorist attacks compared to the previous year.

Most of the foiled attacks involved firearms (689) and explosive devices (326), with the others being stabbings, car-rammings, suicide bombings and abductions.

In the Gaza Strip, 2,500 suspects were evaluated, with 650 eventually interrogated, leading to actionable intelligence. A total of 1,350 individuals were detained, including 40 senior commanders, 165 close associates of top officials and 45 participants in the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel.

Three hostage-rescue missions and several body-recovery operations were conducted during the course of the war in Gaza. The Shin Bet shared audio recordings from the extraction of Ori Megidish on October 30, 2023 and the rescue of Louis Har and Fernando Marman on February 12, 2024.

Inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders, 20 terror cells involving Arab Israelis were uncovered, with five planning attacks using car bombs or other explosives. The “Tequila” rapid intervention counter-terror force was dispatched 32 times to prevent imminent attacks.

In Lebanon, 25 senior commanders from Palestinian terror groups were eliminated, including members of Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine [PFLP].

In countering the Iranian threat, there was a 400% rise in espionage-related arrests, 13 plots foiled and 27 indictments.

On the cyber-defense front, there were 700 major cyberattacks thwarted, a five-fold increase from 2023.

The report also detailed international missions providing security for high-profile events, such as the Olympics in Paris and Eurovision in Malmo. It noted challenges, including cyber threats and Iranian infiltration attempts.

Israeli Victims Among Wounded in New Orleans Attack

by Sharon Kidon ~ Ynetnews

Bourbon Street, New Orleans, Louisiana on New Years Eve

Thursday, 2 January 2025 | Two Israeli nationals remain hospitalized and on ventilators following a deadly ramming and shooting attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Eve, Elad Shoshan, Israel’s consul to the US Southwest and deputy consul general, told Ynetnews on Thursday.

One victim is stable and not in life-threatening condition, while the other is in moderate to serious condition. Both remain unable to communicate. “We hope to speak with them tomorrow,” Shoshan said.

The attack, now being investigated as an act of terrorism by the FBI, has claimed the lives of 15 people and left over 30 others injured. The suspect, identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, reportedly drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m., then opened fire on police before being fatally shot. Officials found an Islamic State flag in the vehicle, and investigators are examining possible ties to foreign terror groups.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the truck plowed through revelers, followed by gunfire. Two officers were injured before police neutralized the attacker. Explosive devices were later found at the scene, prompting further investigation and detonation efforts.

Most victims were local residents celebrating New Year’s Eve, with the Sugar Bowl set to take place hours later. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the attack, and outgoing President Joe Biden offered federal assistance in a call with Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
